Maryland Avenue NE
A new fence became an opportunity to visually open this small garden while providing it with a decorative focal point. The handmade fence, double gate and pergola take their cue from the Arts & Crafts-inspired addition built onto the back of the house. The curved wood sections negotiate the height difference between the taller neighboring fences while the rustic open-top border made of unpeeled cedar branches reveals the surrounding views helping make the garden feel less constricting. The bluestone patio breaks up the large expanse of the brick, like an area rug laid over the diagonally oriented herringbone pattern.
