11th & C Street NE

A well thought-out layout plan became a major consideration in the design of this garden which called for circulation space from four access points (kitchen, basement, garage and alley), generous room for seating and dining areas as well as maximizing the available planting space.  The main patio’s geometric bluestone pattern is set within the surrounding herringbone brick.  The raised planters match the garage and provide additional seating along their bluestone copings.  The improvements to the neighbors’ exterior walls included adding stucco and a set of faux window shutters made of refurbished antique armoire doors.  The final phase involved detailed design of an “altar wall” collage that incorporates the fountain, climbing hydrangeas, hanging planters and a variety of decorative objects.  The garden was featured during the 2008 Capitol Hill House & Garden Tour.
