South Arlington, Virginia
The multi-year master plan approach provided a complete transformation of this suburban lot’s blank front lawn, sprawling driveway and a difficult to manage backyard. The arched pergola and gate at the head of the driveway create an attractive transition between the street and the private backyard. The stepped side path provides comfortable access down to the sloping backyard where the semi-circular seat wall allows for a large level seating area. The patio is screened by an arch of understory trees which are also planted at the base of the raised deck to extend the plantings up to its level while softening its view from below. In the front, the large planting areas that surround a small lawn and a generous stone walk reclaim the front garden’s space framing the house and providing privacy for the screened side porch.
