Haymarket, Virginia

This cabin-style house was largely cut off from its surrounding woodland by an enormous driveway and a large lawn.  The new front garden and meadow (with a much reduced lawn) reconnect the house to the larger landscape.  The stone “bridge” (built over an existing culvert) brings focus to the creek that the driveway crosses over.  The steep side path leading to the rear of the house has been retained with a dry-laid stone wall that follows the path of the creek below.  The rear patio’s seat wall separates the cultivated garden space from the surrounding woodland.  A smaller stone patio located in a shady side garden was designed to accommodate client’s large outdoor chess set.
